Porcelain tiles

Porcelain is a popular choice for bathroom tiling.  It's hardwearing and water impervious, with a wide range of colours and styles available.  You'll find that porcelain tiles are stain-resistant and very easy to keep clean and hygienic too, which is an important consideration if you have young children.

Porcelain tiles come in glazed or unglazed versions.  Unglazed tiles are less inclined to become slippery, making them a safer option, but they do need to be treated with sealant to make them fully waterproof.  Porcelain tiles are very cool underfoot, making them perfect for a climate where the weather is hot for much of the year.  They can also be used over underfloor heating to provide comfort during the cooler months.

Natural stone tiles

Natural stone or slate is an unusual option for bathroom floor tiles.  There's certainly plenty of choice of textures and colours, and stone is very hardwearing.  However, you'll need to have stone tiles sealed to make them fully waterproof and to assist with stain resistance.  Cleaning is straightforward, although you will need to use special cleaning products that are suitable for use on natural stone, as bleach-based cleaners may be too harsh and could damage the surface.

Stone is cool underfoot, but it is also suitable for use over underfloor heating.

Vinyl flooring

Vinyl flooring works very well in a bathroom setting.  It's completely waterproof, soft and warm underfoot and is hardwearing.  You can choose from colours and patterns to wood and stone-effect finishes, making vinyl a very versatile option.

Engineered wood flooring

If you like the idea of having natural timber flooring in your bathroom, you might want to consider engineered wood.  Engineered wood is made up of several right-angled layers, providing a much more hard-wearing and stable product than solid wood or cheaper laminate products.  The wood is treated to make it water-resistant in humid conditions, although you will need to mop up excess water as too much soaking can damage the finish over time.

Rubber tiles

Rubber tiles are available in many different colours, patterns and textures.  They are waterproof, tough, and easy to clean, as well as being soft, warm, and non-slip underfoot, making them perfect for a family situation.
